Tournament Review:
After a long training session last weekend, the final was narrowed down to 16 brave warriors who would compete for the first Mithril Knights Xbox Open.
The tournament began with an upset as Lightingxxblade prevailed over the outside favourite LordXander, who had been very impressive in training; skilful tactics paid off to provide a turn up for the books. Other highlights included a close fought victory for SOR Burzum over UKH3enry in a match that was hanging in the balance before H3nry had to withdraw early, and an impressive display by ES Tiberon, defeating Cainreaker 10 – 6 in a result that would prove controversial given how the tournament would unfold.
The match of the first round, though, took place between Darkpally1 and Jonathan1515. Jonathan was a clear favourite going into this match, being a member of the Mithril Knights, but at the halfway point, with the score neck-and-neck, it became clear that Pally was giving the performance of his life. It was impossible to separate the two fighters as the score slowly advanced to 9 all. In the deciding fight both warriors were cagey, unwilling to make the first move for fear of being caught in a combo. After several minutes of tentative axe tag it was Darkpally1 that prevailed, finally eliminating Jonathan1515 in something of an upset.
Round 2 started with disappointment as ES Tiberon was forced to withdraw, to be replaced by his first round opponent, Cainreaker. This left Blitzkrieg Boys as the clear favourite, and he cemented this status with an impressive 10 – 3 performance against Darkpally1, who, as an archer specialist, had already progressed further than many expected. Ronjons met L Star 32 in the fight of the round, eking out an impressive 10 – 8 performance over the veteran all-rounder. Sor Burzum progressed with a dominating performance against FEAR FOOTBALL, while Cainreaker advanced against Lightingxxblade (who gave a very credible performance as a non-warrior player) on a server that was plagued with lag.
The semi-finals saw the upset of the tournament as MIGHTY Ronjons overthrew the impressive and seemingly unstoppable Blitzkrieg Boys. Ronjons pulled out the performance of his career to go through to the final 10 – 5! SOR Burzum then faced Cainreaker in the remaining semi-final in a match that many felt could go either way. Burzum is a Mithril Knights regular but Cainreaker, formerly of The Black Council, has a fearsome reputation as a HTDM warrior.
On the ruins of Osgiliath bridge both warriors closed to engage. Burzum began badly, almost instantly missing a shoulder charge, with Cainreaker taking full advantage of the mistake, and, after unloading several fire attacks, claiming the first kill. The second fight saw Burzum reduce Cainreaker to a slither of health thanks to some skilful combo work but the fight ended prematurely when Cainreaker managed to pull a crowdbreaker and knock her over the edge. Several impressive performances saw Cainreaker take the score to 7 – 4 before controversy erupted as Burzum was knocked off the bridge to the floor below and expected Cainreaker to dance upon her remounting. Instead she was met with an axe to the face and Cainreaker took full advantage to win the fight. The remaining two fights were won with style and skill by the HTDM player and Cainreaker advanced into the final with a dominating performance.
The Final: Venue: Osgilitah . The Mithril Knights' hopes were pinned on Ronjons to take home their own first Xbox open championship but Cainreaker was keen to rain on the parade. Taking an early and commanding lead, Cainreaker landed combo after combo, appearing the more aggressive of the two, to take a commanding 7 –1 lead. Never one to give up, Ronjons pulled back two rounds as time began to run out on the server. With the score at 9 – 3 a new server had to be found, and the players headed over to another Osgiliath bridge.
After 40 warriors, two weeks and countless hours battling, it was match point to Cainreaker. Could Ronjons keep the dream alive? Despite a noble effort it would prove impossible as Cainreaker simply dominated under the pressure and easily despatched Ronjons to take the first Mithril Knights championship!
Congratulations to Cainreaker!
Final thoughts: The tournament was great fun and a successful inauguration for the Mithril Knights. Unfortunately some of the pre-tournament favourites (Giaquinto, Vhoscythe) were unable to take part and, somewhat controversially, top seed ES Tiberon had to withdraw after beating the eventual winner Cainreaker in the first round. However, happenstance and skill favoured the best player on the day: Cainreaker gave a level-headed and clinical performance throughout his remaining matches and even in the final seemed completely impervious to nerves.
Thanks again to all who took part. Thanks to Dizzy and Watchmen for videoing our training round (sorry we didn’t get any video of the final). This was a great tournament.
Look out for the Scout tournament starting on the 9th of Jan. This will be played across a month or so and matches will be organised individually at the convenience of the players. The tournament brackets will be drawn up shortly so if you have not done so, contact SOR Mayhem on here or on Xbox to register. Every match will be videoed for Youtube as I am getting a video capture card.
Thanks for reading!
